Abstract Syntax Notation

Date and time data are commonly transferred along with other data types. Rather than have the user define a type to model date and time data, ASN.1 provides a standard syntax. This standard notation is not only useful, but also ensures uniformity. ASN.1 defines two useful types for transferring time and date data, GeneralizedTime and UTCTime. Two other useful types, ObjectDescriptor and EXTERNAL, were added to the standards in 1988. Type ObjectDescriptor is used with the OBJECT IDENTIFIER type and takes values that are human-readable strings delimited by quotes. The type has seldom been implemented, and will not be discussed further. Furthermore, all Character String types are useful along with EMBEDDED PDV and Unrestricted Character String.
